MICRO - WATERS
Micro-Waters is an exhibition with at its centre a scientific-imaginative investigation of an unexplored world, known but entirely to be investigated through a microscopy of the gaze. Looking inside matter, into the osteoporic pertuosities of corals, is something that not only activates sight, it is a tactile and sensitive investigation of the configuration of an underwater world. When one immerses oneself in the marine environment, the relationship with all the materials and elements that compose it suddenly becomes osmotic. The underwater world is liminal, layered with life and matter: it amplifies our tactile and visual boundaries. Caterina Morigi, who always explores it in apnea, searches the seabed for traces of the alliance between living matter and rocks. Fascinated by how rough surfaces become welcoming zones for corals and molluscs, she combines the images she creates with scientific images of numerous elements analysed by research laboratories. In her work, eidetic rhymes appear between minerals and shells, both composed of calcium carbonate and phosphate. It is an invisible, material and imaginative alliance, evoked by the works on display, impossible to know otherwise. While we can feel and taste the surface of each object with our fingers, this microscopic alliance eludes us. What is hidden in the depths of matter? How can we even imagine a contact zone?
Caterina Morigi
In her research, Caterina Morigi brings attention to matter, teeming with life, the physical and metaphorical territory of union and exchange. To address the substance of things she uses a close, timeless gaze, bringing to light elements that are apparently distant and not perceptible with our senses in their normal state. The work becomes a changeable and iridescent device that serves to effect reversals between subject and frame, centre and margin, and initiate a multitude of different and subjective fluid images.Caterina Morigi (Ravenna, 1991) graduated in visual arts at the IUAV in Venice. Her practice, mainly installation-based, focuses on the changes in matter and the substantial relationship between human and natural. He has participated in art residencies including Et in Arcadia Ego at the Quadriennale di Roma and Atelier 2015 at the Fondazione Bevilacqua la Masa. Her work has been exhibited at Museo MAMbo, Bologna; Palazzo Reale, Milan; Archivio Casa Morra, Naples; Villa Della Regina, Turin; Musée des Merveilles de Tende, FR; Fotografia Europea, Reggio Emilia; Art Rotterdam, NL; Museo Nazionale della Montagna, Turin; Video Sound Art festival, Milan; Istituto Italiano di Cultura, Stockholm, SV.
She is represented by Studio G7 Gallery.
